Introduced in September 2010, the iPod nano (6th Generation) was a radical departure from previous iPod nano generations. Taking a page from iOS, the iPod nano (6th Generation) replaced the click-wheel with a multi-touch screen, allowing it to be nearly as small as the iPod shuffle (4th generation). While the multi-touch OS resembled the look-and-feel of iOS, it was different, nano-specific software.

Unlike the iPod nano (5th generation, which branched out into photos and video, the iPod nano shifted the focus back to audio, removing the camera and adding an FM radio. It was sold in seven colors, in capacities of 8 and 16 GB, for $149 and $179, respectively.

In October 2011, both iPod nano (6th generation) models received a software upgrade and a price reduction, to $129 and $149, respectively. All models were discontinued in September 2012, with the introduction of the iPod nano (7th generation)
