The introduction in October 2012 of the iPad (4th Generation) came as something of a surprise, as the iPad (3rd Generation) had been released just seven months prior, and was a significant upgrade. The surprise announcment served two purposes: with this release, all top-of-the-line iOS product lines now supported the new lighting connector, and iPads fell into an annual release cadence, with October releases typically following iOS and iPhone releases in September. The iPad (4th Generation) was visually identical to its predecessor, but Apple boasted that its A6X processor was nearly twice as fast as the A5X for both general computation and graphics performance. Other improvements included faster Wi-Fi performance, a higher resolution front-facing camera, and support for more LTE bands.

iPad (4th Generation) was available in white or black, and maintained the existing storage capacities and pricing tiers of the iPad (3rd Generation):

  • 16 GB: $499 ($629 with LTE)
  • 32 GB: $599 ($729 with LTE)
  • 64 GB: $699 ($829 with LTE)

In January 2013 a 128 MB model was made available for $799 (or $929 with LTE). All models were discontinued in October 2013 following the release of the iPad Air, but the 16 GB models were revived in March 2014, replacing the corresponding iPad 2 models at $399 ($529 with LTE). They were discontinued for good in October 2014, when the iPad Air 2 pushed the iPad Air into the low-end tier.
