Introduced in October 2012, the iPad mini struck a balance in size between the iPad (4th Generation), which was announced at the same time, and the iPod Touch (5th Generation), announced a month earlier. Driving a 1024x768 display (the same resolution as the non-retina iPad 2), maintaining 10 hours of battery life, and meeting a lower price point meant making sacrifices, however; the iPad mini was powered by an A5 chip, rather than the faster A6 found in the recently announced iPhone 5 or the A6X found in the iPad (4th Generation), and had half the RAM of either.

In other respects, however, the iPad mini matched up well with the iPad (4th Generation): it included the new lighting connector, the same front- and rear-facing cameras, support for dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, and the same broad variety of LTE bands for the cellular models.

iPad (4th Generation) was available in two color combinations, matching those of the iPhone 5: white/silver and black/slate. It was available in three price tiers, based on storage capacity:

  • 16 GB: $329 ($459 with LTE)
  • 32 GB: $429 ($559 with LTE)
  • 64 GB: $529 ($659 with LTE)

In October 2013, with the announcement of the iPad mini 2, the 32 GB and 64 GB models were discontinued, and the 16 GB models receive a price cut to $299 ($429 with LFE). In October 2014, they received a second price cut to $249 ($379 with LTE), with the introduction of the iPad mini 3. The 16 GB models were quietly discontinued in June 2015, making the iPad mini the longest-sold iPad to date.
